When the musical fantasy Xanadu was released in theaters in 1980, it failed on pretty much every level. The movie tanked, critics hated it, and audiences were left bewildered at the laughably outlandish visuals. So naturally, 30 years later, someone adapted it into a play. All the components of the original film are still in place: the overly sentimental songs haven’t changed; the gaudy costumes are even gaudier, and there’s more roller boogie than you can shake a stick at. However, the cast and crew behind this particular debacle are in on the joke, ensuring that this time around, the audiences will be laughing on purpose.
