#90. Beans on Toast, The Olde Ship

Because ustedes gentle readers love lists, and we lazy scribes love easy hits, behold the latest entry in our Top 100 dishes list that continues until Best Of–at which point, we'll give you MORE lists! Now, on with the show…

Traditional British pub food isn't meant to be nuanced, and the baked beans with toast dish at the venerable Olde Ship is about as subtle as a hammer on your toe. But, oh, that runny, wonderful pain…

]

Six pieces of fried toast, arranged three to a side and stacked like the masts of one of the many ships the Olde Ship immortalizes in their menu. Heinz baked beans in the center, turning one piece of bread into mush because of its thick, sugary gravy, while the rest remain stiff as planks. Toss in Tabasco, which isn't particularly British but neither is the Lakers-Celtics game on all the tellies. Crunchy, soggy, sweet nectar of the Windsors! Why did we secede from the Crown again?
