By now, lemon pepper is just one of the many options for your morning bagel, but it was a revelation back in the early 1990s, when my now-wife, forever-chica first tasted the flavor at the Koffee Klatch in Laguna Beach. She had it in the form of the Love Bagel, a straightforward treat of your bagel choice topped with cream cheese, tomatoes, red onions and that lemon pepper. I never had it until recently, when we spent a day in Laguna for a one-day pre-honeymoon.

While many culinary trends have come and gone since, the Love Bagel remains, perhaps because it's a grand morning pick-me-up: the tartness of the tomatoes, the zip of the onions, the soothing comfort of the bagel and cream cheese. And then the lemon pepper comes in at the end, brightening everything–and life itself, indeed. Sure, you can find this exact dish in virtually every coffee shop in Southern California–but who else would call it love?
