After years of refusing to spill the syringes, Mark McGwire admitted today to having used steroids on and off again for a decade. “I wish I'd never touched steroids,” said the former big league slugger, via ESPN. “It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I
wish I had never played during the steroid era.”
The admission apparently allows McGwire to become a St. Louis Cardinals hitting coach. It also vaults him to No. 3 on the list of Scummiest Athletes With Orange County Ties. The top five follow after the jump . . .
OC connection: His brutally murdered ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, grew up in Garden Grove, where she attended Gilbert Elementary School, Skylark Elementary School, Hare Intermediate School and Rancho Alamitos High School. Her family moved to Monarch Bay during her junior year and she was elected one of Dana Hills High School's homecoming princesses. Her family traveled from Dana Point to attend their ex-son-in-law's murder trial. O.J.'s youngest kids live with the former in-laws there now.
OC connection: He was born in Cypress and at age 3 shot a 48 over nine holes at the Navy Golf Club there. He became the youngest U.S. Junior Amateur champion while a 15-year-old student at Western High School in Anaheim, the town that is now home to the Tiger Woods Learning Center educational facility. Oh, and he allegedly banged some chick who wasn't his wife in Newport Beach.
OC connection: He and his wife Stephanie McGwire reside in a gated Shady Canyon community in Irvine. His having tarnished the sanctity of baseball is mitigated somewhat by the couple having created the Mark McGwire Foundation for Children to
support agencies that help children who have been sexually and
physically abused come to terms with difficult childhoods.
OC connection: He got engaged to the former Vanessa Laine while she was still a 17-year-old senior at Marina High School in Huntington Beach, they were married in Dana Point and they are raising their two daughters behind the gates of a Newport Coast neighborhood. Fortunately, Kobe left Orange County to cheat on the Mrs. (Subliminal Message to Kobe: It only took one ring to keep Vanessa, but it'll take three more championship rings with the Lakers to get knocked off this list.)
OC connection: Police were called to The Worm's home on the Peninsula 70 times to break up loud parties. It was also in Newport Beach that he settled down with Michelle Moyer, who bore him two children. She recently got a judge to order Freaky to pay her $50,000 a month in child support. After Rodman's brilliant NBA career–mostly notably with the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls–he played briefly with the American Basketball Association's Long Beach Jam and Orange County Crush.
