Attention whiskey aficionados and assorted drunkards with fancy taste: 320 Main in Seal Beach is having what amounts to a fire sale on Pappy Van Winkle, the most sought-after bourbon in the world. Buffalo Trace Distillery only releases a small allotment of Pappy Van Winkle, and not very often, and not to very many people. The result is that while the price tag on the bottle of 23-year-old bourbon says $250, you can't lay your hands on a bottle for less than $1500.
So back to the fire sale, then: on Monday, July 21, the Schiffers will be hosting a Pappy Van Winkle tasting dinner. You will be tasting the entire line of Pappy Van Winkle: the 12 year bourbon, the 13 year rye, the 15 year, the 20 year, and the 23 year bourbons.
There will be a five-course dinner by chef Jaime Carrano, and dinner starts promptly at 7 p.m. If five drinks of rare whiskey aren't enough for you, there will be a cocktail hour (not included in the price) beginning at 6 p.m. Boston sours made with a positively juvenile 10-year-old Rip Van Winkle? Sazeracs with Sazerac 6-year-old rye? George T. Stagg neat? Yes, please.
The cost? $199. You'll be charged $246.46 out the door, tax and tip included. Given that a taste of the 23-year-old Pappy alone costs $200, when you can find it in a bar and convince the bartender to serve it to you, and that Carrano's last collaborative tasting dinner sold out at $125 a seat, this is an insanely good deal.
