A complaint about ailing dogs led Santa Ana code enforcement officers to home where they rescued 19 malnourished and neglected canines of various breeds Tuesday morning, according to police.

Officers were speaking with a mother and son in the 2200 block of West 14th Street just after 8:40 a.m. when the code enforcers “noticed 19 ill or neglected dogs of various breeds and ages that were on the property,” said Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna, the department spokesman.
The dogs were handed over to animal control officers, who took them to an Orange County shelter where they are being treated for a variety of maladies, including mange, scabies, malnutrition and eye infections, Bertagna said.
Investigators, meanwhile, handed over their information to prosecutors, who will decide if charges are warranted, according to Bertagna, who reports no arrests have been made yet.
