11 Corona del Mar High School Students Expelled for Cheating

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District board voted just after midnight today to expel 11 students who were part of a wide-ranging cheating scandal at Corona del Mar High School that may have actually involved as many as 150 students.

The expulsions were announced after a long closed session that followed the regular board meeting.

Those students who were expelled will be allowed to attend other schools in the district.

Meanwhile, the parents of four of those students have circulated a letter around the school district asking why their children are being punished when the scandal involves as many as 150 who worked with Timothy Lance Lai, a private tutor who is still being sought by Newport Beach cops for questioning but has disappeared.

The parents claim administrators told them if the implicated students cooperated in the investigation, which they did, then their punishment would be light. Instead, they were suspended and then recommended for expulsion by Corona del Mar High's Principal Kathy Scott.
