There comes a certain night at the Observation Bar at the Queen Mary when suddenly all the guys are dressed like Humphrey Bogart (or Indiana Jones) and all the women look like young Gloria Swanson, and that’s how you know the Art Deco festival is in town. (Last time we were there, it overlapped with a paranormal investigators convention, so the Bogarts were all talking about Bigfoot—now that’s a Friday night!) For this Gatbsy-themed 10th festival, there’s vintage shopping, state-of-the-art-deco lectures and many Prohibition-themed tastings, plus a double-decker deco bus tour of Long Beach and lots of live entertainment right out of Boardwalk Empire. Come dressed to inspire a particularly Raymond Chandler-ian metaphor, and be ready to pack away the hooch like somebody from a Mickey Spillane novel. The action lasts all weekend—will you?
