This Week in Grape Juicethe Good Kind

An Amazon.com search for “understanding your lover” brought in more than 500 responses. Admittedly, some titles involved communicating more effectively with your dog, but still—it seems the we just don't get it. The solution to this problem is incredibly simple: learn about each other. Chances are you won't spend your life with someone who loves everything you love. If you're lucky, you'll find someone who at least loves you. If you love that person back, your best bet to keep her around is to appreciate his or her loves. Like wine, for example.

This Valentine's Day, Symposium Wine Bar hosts Love is Blind, an event for lovers of wine and one another. As the name suggests, the tasting is blind; the event isn't about finding great wines but learning what aspects of wine you enjoy. A bottle of wine is similar to a partner; all that really matters is how well you work together. Six different varietals will not only teach you about wine but also reveal your partner's delicate tastes. Along with the vino, there will be meat, cheese, chocolate and champagne.

Learn what you like, but more important, learn what flavors bring a wicked twinkle to her eye or a blush to his cheek. That is, if your partner likes wine. Better check first; Valentine's Day is a bad time to reveal how little you know about each other.

Love is Blind at Symposium Wine Bar, 2963 Michelson, Ste. B, Irvine, (949) 863-6929; www.symposiumwinebar.com. Tues., 8 p.m. $100 per couple. Reservations required.
