It's the King Midas of Garlic. Though it's not a dish in itself, the Lebanese garlic sauce at Sasoon Chicken turns everything it touches into richly garlicky gold. Besides the small cup they provide with your order of rotisserie chicken, you'll want to order a bigger container to take home with you.
Everything tastes amazing with this stuff's pungent garlic and tangy lemon bite: Sasoon's roasted chicken, of course, and the rather ordinary, supermarket-quality pita bread. The Styrofoam take-out box. The big pile of napkins you'll use up. Everything. Take some home. You'll find ways to use it.
The white paste looks like mayo, but toum doesn't have any mayo in it. It might resemble lard, but it's not lard-based. If you were to drop a spoonful of it into a hot pan, toum doesn't melt like lard. It sizzles, hissing at you for trying to kill it, but it doesn't melt. It keeps hissing and burbling while your spouse yells from across the house, "what's that smell?" Ask me how I know this.
