[UPDATED With Agreement Ratified:] Disneyland and UNITE HERE Local 11 Near Bargaining Agreement, Higher Wages, Better Healthcare For Hotel Workers

UPDATE, DEC. 8, 10:41 A.M.: The ballots have been counted and the results announced. The fierce feud is over.

An “overwhelming majority” of UNITE HERE Local 11 members who cast ballots yesterday voted in support of the new collective bargaining agreement with Disneyland Resort.
The newly ratified agreeement comes after a years long debate over the treatment and wages of workers at three Disney-owned hotels. The agreement, which also covers union members who work at the Central Bakery, will stay in effect until the beginning of 2017, says Disney spokesman Suzi Brown.
In a statement, Tom Walsh, president of UNITE HERE Local 11, says the union is grateful for the extra security the contact affords its members. “It was a long road, but in the end both sides compromised to reach a fair deal.”

ORIGINAL POST, DEC. 5, 10:46 A.M.: Disneyland and the union representing its hotel workers just finished negotiating a bargaining agreement, which means pay hikes, cheaper health care and shorter hours decreased workloads could be in the near future for hotel workers.

Disneyland just put out a news release announcing it has finished negotiating a five-year collective-bargaining agreement with UNITE HERE Local 11, the union that represents the 2,100 or so people who work at Disneyland Hotel, Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel and Disney's Grand Californian Hotel.
Although both groups say they're behind the plan, it won't go into effect until after a vote ratifying it.

Here's a joint statement from Disneyland and UNITE HERE:

“We are pleased that we were able to craft a fair and comprehensive agreement that works for the Disneyland Resort and, most important, for the 2,100 union hotel workers who now have the security of working with a multiyear contract in place. While it has been a long journey, we were able to cooperate and reach compromises that were agreeable to all parties and benefitted the Local 11 cast members who help deliver an unparalleled level of service to our Disneyland Resort guests every day.”

The move comes after a years-long process and multiple stalled negotiations between Disneyland and the union. Check out our cover story from last year.
