​Throughout movie history, filmmakers have relied on music to add impact to scenes, be they comedic, dramatic, violent or whatever. Starting in the 1960s, they began to employ popular music, rather than instrumental scores made specifically for the films themselves. Some pop songs clearly work better onscreen than others (Pierce Brosnan murdering ABBA, anyone?), and only a select few Hollywood denizens manage to use music in a way that links the two media forever so that you can't think of one without the other.
