A man who died after losing control of his vehicle and colliding with a palm tree and light pole in Newport Beach Sunday afternoon has been identified.
He was Gex Bennett Coons, 96, of Newport Beach.
If he had a valid license, how on earth did he pass his last drivers test?

Coons was the sole occupant of the car that crashed just before 2:45 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Dover Drive and Cliff Drive.
He only appeared to have minor injuries and was transported to Western Medical Center for an evaluation, where it was discovered he had actually sustained internal injuries, according to a statement from Jennifer Manzella, the Newport Beach Police spokeswoman.
Coons succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital on Tuesday, Manzella added.
The collision is still under investigation.
