While playing a game of pool and enjoying a stiff drink at Fullerton bar Bananas, it's hard to imagine this joint has changed much over the decades. The large room is covered by vaulted wood ceilings supported by a lattice work of beams. Ceiling fans twirl, tube televisions flicker, and suds are slung. The crowd features a nice mix of young and veteran imbibers. Bananas offers a small selection of draft beers, but the liquor lineup at the full bar is impressive. Distractions include three pool tables and a couple of electronic dartboards. Thursday nights see performances from local bands; this old dog actually allows for some good acoustics. More >>

    Akbar

4356 Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90029
    323-665-6810

http://www.akbarsilverlake.com Silver Lake's Moroccan-themed gay grotto is a long-running fave, as much for its stiff, reasonably priced drinks as for its vivacious, open-to-all atmosphere. When the adjacent dance room was added a few years ago, it became a full-fledged club. The dark and sweaty pit pumps and pulsates on weekends thanks to dynamic electro/disco mixes from local DJs. Expect a bevy of boho bi and gay grinders in the mix mostly on weekends, and local of all ilks during the week - even crafters (!), who take over with an early gathering every Wednesday. More >>

2913 E. Anaheim St. Long Beach, CA 90804
    562-434-8292

http://www.alexsbar.com The dim red lights and walls covered from top to bottom with framed portraits of bull fighters and luchadores manages to make Alex's Bar bizarrely lovable. This Long Beach favorite comes equipped with a full bar, pool table, and insanely amusing bathroom wall murals for your enjoyment. Not only does this venue host a slew of talented up-and-coming local musicians on a weekly basis, but it is also used as the set for filming the Fangtasia bar scenes in HBO's True Blood series. Cozy and kitschy with friendly bar service, this place will have your spirits high enough to consider shelling out three bucks to make memories in the custom photo booth hiding at the corner of the bar. • All Star Lanes

    All Star Lanes

4459 Eagle Rock Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90041
    323-254-2579

http://www.allstarlanesbowling.com All Star Lanes is an iconic Eagle Rock bowling alley, located on Eagle Rock Boulevard. The spacious mid-century interior doesn't look like it's been updated since the day it opened, but it holds 22 lanes for all levels of rollers, plus a bar in the back to keep things lively. There are pool tables and arcade games for the kids, plus the best glow-in-the-dark bowling you'll find anywhere. Lanes run $4/game on weeknights and $6 on weekends, but the cheap drinks ensure you won't end up spending too much. There's also an occasional free comedy show held near the bar, called the 4 & 20 show, which features some of the best comedians working in L.A. today. More >>

  • Angels Stadium Of Anaheim

    Angels Stadium Of Anaheim

2000 E. Gene Autry Way Anaheim, CA 92805
    714-940-2070

http://anaheim.angels.mlb.com Angels Stadium of Anaheim is where your Anaheim Angels of Anaheim play, It’s probably most famous for the Big A scoreboard in the parking lot, and for the two big helmets outside the ticket stand. It underwent a major renovation in the 1990s, and it’s now one of the oldest stadiums in baseball because almost every other major league baseball team has decided to go with newer venues in that time period. But it’s also a great place for people watching. Are you dying to see Orange County's power brokers (and their sycophants) in person? Just go to any Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim game, whip out your binoculars in your crappy, upper-deck seats, and focus on the seats nearest to home plate. You'll see multimillionaire corporate executives, judges, labor-union bosses, FBI agents, nightclub owners, ex-professional athletes, trust-fund babies, Orange County Register columnists, prosecutors and, yes, even high-priced call girls.
