Soweto Gospel Choir
The 26-member Soweto Gospel Choir have been making the arts center circuit for a few years now, but their significance runs a lot deeper than just playing in front of well-off Americans who want to feel worldly. Theyve performed for Nelson Mandela in their home country of South Africa, and won back-to-back Grammys in 2007 and 2008 for Best Traditional World Music Album, one of the many more obscure categories that unfortunately dont get shown on TV. Though the word gospel might suggest a certain type of music, theres influences of several genres and cultures apparent in the groups performances. The choir is rebounding from the loss of co-founder and musical director David Mulovhedzi, who passed away from cancer this past December.
