One If by Land
The Righteous Brothers-of whom Bill Medley made up one-half-gave millions of baby boomers the warm fuzzies with their melodramatic, azure-orbed soul. Meh to that. Paul Revere & the Raiders, however, haven't lost their winsome sparkle, even four decades past the group's heyday. Overlook the Raiders' corny American Revolutionary outfits and dig this Pacific Northwest band's glorious songs, many of which surely were penned with fleeting chart success in mind by pros for hire, but which still thrill today. The instant-gratification wallop of "Steppin' Out," "Just Like Me," "Kicks," "Hungry" and "Good Thing" particularly resonate among the Raiders' 23 hits. In their best work, garage-punk sneer collides with golden, mid-'60s pop glee, marked by soaring, unforgettable melodies. If these tunes don't put a spring in your step, you might want to get some new legs.
