For more than a decade, Canadian band Metric have been making the kind of music other bands dream about when they dream about making anthems—music with gigantic happy-sad choruses, melodies that burst like fireworks and vocals (by their much-loved singer-multi-instrumentalist Emily Haines) that run in flames across the top of every song. Now, Metric’s newest album Synthetic delivers a Lou Reed collab—much easier to get into than that Metallica team-up!—and plenty of down-but-not-out synth-rock songs that teleport the bombast and romance of ye olde stadium fillers like prime T. Rex and U2 into the 21st century. This band is big, in several senses of the word.
