Now in its third year, the 2014 Irvine International Film Festival once again brings new indie cinema to the OC, offering a wide range of films from both the US and abroad. Even though only about 10% of the filmmakers chosen seem to be women, we’re hoping for some diverse perspectives in the house, unlike what you’ll see at this year’s straight white male-dominated Globes and Oscars. Director Malcolm Clarke’s The Lady in Number 6, about 109-year-old Alice Sommer, the world’s oldest living pianist and Holocaust survivor who joined the orchestra to keep from being sent to the gas chamber, is certainly one to put on your list, as well as director Isabel Peppard’s dark and disturbing animated short Butterflies and the stunningly beautiful Antarctica by Anthony Powell.
