Forbidden Zone

In these dire, commercially pornographic, gore-thriller times, a reminder of the awesome No Wave cinema of the late '70s and early '80s has arrived. Rolling in the same gutter as guerrilla, cinematic Satans like John Waters, in 1982 writer-director Richard Elfman released one of the freakiest, most morally reprehensible and entirely magnificent schlock-shock musicals ever filmed—and he allowed his brother Danny to score it. Filled with deranged characters—including Herve Villechaize and Susan Tyrrell as the King and Queen of the Sixth Dimension and the jockstrap-jiggling Kipper Kids—demented musical numbers from Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, and a positively daft storyline, Forbidden Zone is way beyond classic; it’s anti-classic, de-evolutionary disestablishmentarianism, in fact (yay!). Your admission ticket also means you could win dinner at Richard Elfman’s house. Cooked by Richard Elfman. Pass the witch’s egg, please.
