Thurs/April 8 I am bored with Thursdays. Go to your neighborhood bar (if you don't have one, go to Father's in Santa Ana), and have some drinks. Tell 'em I sent you and tip like a pro. Okay? Okay.
Fri I went to a wedding last year that was so very high-powered GOP that Karen Hughes gave a reading (Book of Ruth—pretty!) and Larry Gatlin of the Gatlin Brothers sang the Jesus-y songs. At first we were kind of snickering—Gatlin Brothers, ack!—but then we soothed and fell into the spell. As he's aged, he's gotten one of those kind of beautiful, wrecked voices, almost a croak, that bespeaks so much more life than a callow little croon ever could. The Brothers sing such thangs as "All the Gold in California" and "She Used to be Somebody's Baby," and they're much better than The Oakridge Boys. 8 p.m. $25-$125. Also Sat. Orange County Performing Arts Center, Segerstrom Hall, 600 Town Center Dr., Costa Mesa, (714) 740-7878 or (213) 365-3500; www.ocpac.org. Sat The Muffs? At Detroit Bar? Okay, now the Costa Mesa Mafia is just getting crazy with the fancy bookings! Who's next? Elvis? With Reeve Oliver. $8. 9 p.m. 21+. Detroit Bar, 843 W. 19th St., Costa Mesa, (949) 642-0600. Sun Go get some Jesuson you, along with some live music, prayer and preaching. Now you won't have to burn in Hell for all eternity! Don't you feel better, now that you're not damned? 6:15-7:30 a.m. Free. Easter Sunrise Service: Surf City Alive, Pier Plaza, adjacent to Huntington Beach Pier, Main St. & Pacific Coast Hwy., Huntington Beach, (714) 969-1190. Mon Oh, honey, this is your lucky Monday! Not only are all those hot, muscley, outdoorsy Sierra Singles having their Chapter Meeting, but there's a potluck, too, with a happy hour, music and raffles! Mountaineer and guide Kurt Wedbergtalks about a recent trek in the Alps. I bet he's fierce! Bring utensils, potluck item and a beverage. 6:30 p.m. $2. Costa Mesa Community Center, 1845 Park Ave., Costa Mesa, (714) 963-6345. Tues How's this for a freakin' quadruple bill? The Busstop Hurricanes alone are worth all your dripping love, with Twisty Lemons guitar-goddessing all over the stage (often on her back) and Mick taking a break from his bottle to sing your panties off while you girl fight for his favor, but The Ziggens are up there on the throbbing-heart meter, too. Chris Paul Overall has funny hair and a super-hot sister, and I don't know who Brodii Splitare. Aight. 8 p.m. $12. All ages. House of Blues, 1530 S. Disneyland Dr., Anaheim, (714) 778-2583. Wed This is just weird. The OC Young Republicansare hosting Ted Hayes, who'll speak at their general meeting. Hayes is a longtime homeless advocate who used to hang out at all the '80s peacenik stuff, whether we were protesting Iran-contra or, you know, protesting Iran-contra. Oh! Or kicking off the Great Peace March. That was fun. (Melissa Manchester played, and Mr. Mister!) Now his Dome City gets a ton of corporate support, with a model that's similar to Delancey Street's recovery immersion. Did Hayes go over to the dark side without our having heard about it? Are the Compassionate Conservatives actually putting their money where their mouth is? Or is this some weird Libertarian/Soylent Green bit of horror? Don't you think you should find out and let me know? Social starts at 6:30 p.m.; meeting at 7. The Westin, South Coast Plaza, 686 Anton, Costa Mesa. For more info, contact Marti Michalis at email@example.com. Thurs/April 15 I'm still bored with Thursdays, but this one has something fancy: The Newport Beach Film Festival Opening Gala. Two of the more attractive humans alive—Pierce Brosnanand Julianne Moore—kick it off with their Laws of Attraction. Following the screening is the gala, with an Absolut bar and a whole bunch of grub. 7:30 p.m. Tickets are a fierce $80. Screening at Edwards Big Newport, 300 Newport Center Dr., Newport Beach; gala follows at the Radisson Hotel, 4545 MacArthur Blvd., Newport Beach. (949) 253-2880.
