Cheap Girls

Soaked through with booze and ’90s alt-rock, the Michigan three-piece Cheap Girls write the kind of great, whooping guitar anthems you may have thought were extinct. Closer in current terms to the Whigs than to Surfer Blood, songs like “Ft. Lauderdale” and the Lotion-recalling “Sleeping Weather” owe much to bassist/vocalist Ian Graham’s casually strained singing and the dogged excavation of life’s mundane details in his lyrics. The new-ish album My Roaring 20’s is the follow-up to the trio’s debut Find Me A Drink Home, and it’s packed with winners that don’t bother sticking around for more than two or three minutes each. If a ’90s revival is inevitable, it’s nice to know that young bands like Cheap Girls are willing to look beyond Nirvana for inspiration.
