Soaked through with booze and 90s alt-rock, the Michigan three-piece Cheap Girls write the kind of great, whooping guitar anthems you may have thought were extinct. Closer in current terms to the Whigs than to Surfer Blood, songs like Ft. Lauderdale and the Lotion-recalling Sleeping Weather owe much to bassist/vocalist Ian Grahams casually strained singing and the dogged excavation of lifes mundane details in his lyrics. The new-ish album My Roaring 20s is the follow-up to the trios debut Find Me A Drink Home, and its packed with winners that dont bother sticking around for more than two or three minutes each. If a 90s revival is inevitable, its nice to know that young bands like Cheap Girls are willing to look beyond Nirvana for inspiration.
