Even as the 85th anniversary of the Academy Awards approaches, those famous golden statuettes continue to attract millions of television viewers. The Oscar for Best original Song (handed out since 1934) is a particularly coveted honor for songwriters, as they are often able to perform their song (or have it performed) during the live broadcast. Previous winners include “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz in 1939 and “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in 1969. The Bowers Museum presents a lecture on these timeless tunes with the help of music historian Larry Maurer, during which he discusses the history and tradition of films and popular music.
