Dating as far back as the 12th century, the story of Tristan and Yseult inspired its fair share of star-crossed lovers (like Lancelot and Guinevere), and though the tale varies slightly from poet to poet, the bones are the same: The king of the land sends his super handsome nephew to retrieve the betrothed future queen (who is also young and beautiful), and to travel back with her under an endless stream of starry nights, and surprise, surprise: trouble starts. This rendition, performed and produced by British theater troupe Kneehigh, gets a jolt of live music, aerialist feats, slapstick comedy and energetic dancing, plus a retro ‘50s aesthetic. This Tristan & Yseult is heralded as “fantastically fun” and “beautifully brilliant”—you’ll almost forget that it’s a heart-wrenching, soul-crushing tragedy.
