Let’s shine some light on reptile rockers the Black Mambas, who turn Bell Gardens circa 2014 into London or New York circa 1975—that year right before punk became a thing, and rock ‘n’ roll just kept getting harder, faster and louder. Their debut 45 on L.A.’s indestructible Wild Records revealed these guys as obvious and enthusiastic heirs to bands like the New York Dolls and the Count Bishops, and tracks from their follow-up full-length are razor-sharp rockers about animal passions and teenage depressions, with deft and welcome nods to the Heartbreakers, the Real Kids and of course L.A.’s Joneses. They’re part of a perfectly put-together bill with their big-brother band Crazy Squeeze—Stitches members, current and ex, doing punky pub rock and a blistering Cock Sparrer cover—as well as Richmond Sluts and Telephone Lovers.
