Marcus Sarinana Gurrola, the Garden Grove 42-year-old accused of firing more than 50 semiautomatic gun rounds into the sky and ground at busy Fashion Island Saturday, was “destitute” and venting his life problems,” according to the Newport Beach Police Department.

Videos from horrified shoppers with visions of Newton, Connecticut, dancing in their heads follow after the jump.

The first video is more telling from the audio of the gunshots than it is visuals from videographer Patrick Wyrick, who was crouched behind a vehicle.

Wyrick included this explanation:

I was taking packages out to the car when I heard a bunch of shots. I wasn't sure they were real or not. Then a heard another set of shots and then another. I couldn't see who was shooting, but I started to take video in the direction the shots came from while standing behind the car you see in the foreground. My video catches the last two clips he shot and I could finally see him when he shot off the last clip. You can barely make the shooter out. He is just beneath the little redish triangle immediately left of the two palm trees in the center of the picture.

Before I left, I saw the him on the ground and surrounded by police, but my daughter was very upset so I left to pick them up and get out of the area.

My wife and daughter were at an ice cream shop in the mall when the shooting happened. They ended up running and screaming with everyone toward the opposite side of the mall.

The next, short video, shows shoppers running for safety.

Editor Gustavo Arellano broke the news for the Weekly Saturday evening:

BREAKING NEWS: Authorities: Shooting Today at Fashion Island; No Injuries (Thank God), Person in Custody

Gurrola, who was booked into Orange County Jail on suspicion of
shooting at an inhabited dwelling, may have been unemployed and, given the amount of personal items found inside his vehicle, living in the white Volvo he was trying to get into when two Newport Beach police officers on bicycles confronted him. Gurrola gave up without incident.

He apparently has no criminal history in California, had been registered to have a firearm before his permit expired in 2001 and had registered as a guard-patrolman with the state Bureau
of Security and Investigative Services.
