No. 89: Sweet Potato Tater Tots at Pee Wee's Famous
Welcome to the 2011 edition of Stick A Fork In It's 100 Favorite Dishes. We've just kicked off our countdown to #1 (which will appear the same week as our compendium on all that's good and right about Orange County).
What's the point of giving recognition to a side dish? I did it last year, and I got grief for it, and I don't care. While I always have good food at Pee Wee's--I reviewed their bánh mì burger and it's one of the only Vietnamese-type sandwiches that costs more than $3 that I would bother with--I secretly crave their sweet potato tots, crispy, crunchy, and juuuust slightly charred around the edges, soft in the middle, and perfect with just about any sauce they have. So, yes, a side dish, but one that managed to get past my intense dislike of deep-fried sweet potatoes and worm its way into my brain.
