Irvine Marie Callender's Closed To Make Way For Meizhou Dongpo

Irvine's Marie Callender's Restaurant closed this week after its landlord, The Irvine Company, did not renew its lease. The restaurant had been a staple of the Culver Plaza Shopping Center, which is anchored by 99 Ranch Supermarket, for about 15 years.

The closure makes way for Meizhou Dongpo, a high-end Sichuan restaurant that's a giant in China and is now making headways in the U.S.

It opened its first U.S. location at the Westfield Mall in Century City in 2013, serving dan dan noodles, pan-fried pork dumplings, and a so-called Meizhou roasted duck—its take on Peking duck.

Meizhou Dongpo restaurants are known for their chic-modern design. One is expected to open this year in Las Vegas inside Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian. Another is being built in Arcadia's Westfield Santa Anita Mall along with the third Din Tai Fung within the city's limits.

When Meizhou Dongpo opens in Irvine, its address will be 15363 Culver Drive, Irvine, next to Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot. The menu will most likely be the same or similar to the Century City restaurant, which is available for you to peruse now at http://meizhourestaurants.com.

In the meantime, cue the inevitable "China is taking over" comments and similar remarks in 3...2...1...
