I was going to write about the magnificent taro dumplings at Coconut Rabbit, the spectacular Thai restaurant in Los Alamitos. Had them a couple of months ago: dense, slightly sweet, but nevertheless ethereal things found nowhere else in Orange County. So more taro dumplings were on my mind when returned last week, to have lunch with the gals at Frieda's Specialty Produce. But the taro dumplings were no longer there.

That's right! Every season, the chefs switch up their specials; right now, the seasonal dumplings are a shrimp-crab-chicken combo, slightly fried and enlivened with a pineapple relish and an orange-ginger sauce. They come six to an order, and will be gone come Labor Day, so get thee to Los Al, stat!
