The concept of a rice and beans bowl is certainly not novel, but Boldo Bol, newly opened on la Cuatro in Santa Ana, next to the Frida Theater, takes it a step further. They source their vegetables only from local farmers and backyard growers. Their meats come from ranches they can drive to and inspect, and the fish is all sustainably caught. A refreshing twist on a Chipotle bowl, then.

So why did it make the list so quickly? The chicken. It's been so long--years--since I had a piece of chicken that was anything except protein filler that when I tasted this incredibly moist meat. It tasted like the poulets de Bresse I used to buy in France, with a taste that actually, you know... tastes like chicken.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the whole bowl, and the harissa that came on the side at my request was a chile-spiked punch from the Maghreb, but that chicken stole the show. See also:
