As you know, the end of this work week is Friday the 13th (unless you're a Communist who works weekends). A group of unsuperstitious Orange Countians will celebrate at a Howard Johnson's in Fullerton Friday night, when breaking mirrors, walking under ladders and opening umbrellas indoors will be among the festivities.
Presented by The Freethought Society, "The Anti-Superstition Bash" also marks the West Coast opening of the Friggatriskaidekaphobia Treatment Center, which started on the East Coast and aims to treat and cure "irrational and sometimes harmful Friggatriskaidekaphobia (fear of Friday the 13th)."
All things considered, I'd rather spend Friday the 13th in Philadelphia.
"Friggatriskaidekaphobia doctors and nurses will challenge party-goers, journalists and news crews to walk under a ladder, break a mirror, 'Level a Leprechaun,' 'Bust Open a Ghost Piñata,' spill salt, and dance inside with open umbrellas," organizers wrote in their pitch to me seeking coverage.
Participants will be joined by entertainer Buck Bowen, comedian Ian Harris, singers Christine Jones and Dave DeLuca, caricature artist Celestia War and Friggatriskaidekaphobia Treatment nurse/event coordinator Margaret Downey.
Testing fate takes place in the Howard Johnson Hotel and Conference Center at 222 W. Houston Ave., Fullerton. Tickets are $15 at the door, but you can get inside for $13.13 if you register early via The Freethought Society.
