Orange County Republicans brought Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in town for their 2013 party fundraiser, but local Democrats think they're getting the better deal by scheduling Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) to their big soiree in October.

Castro, who represents a large portion of San Antonio in Congress, isn't a bomb-thrower like Cruz. He's an articulate, rising star in national Democratic politics and his identical twin brother, Julian--the mayor of San Antonio, delighted his party's last presidential nominating convention with his speaking abilities.

Orange County Democrats will welcome Rep. Castro as their keynote speaker for the 19th Annual Harry S Truman Dinner on Oct. 19 at The Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.

There's a scheduled VIP reception set for 5 p.m. and a 6 p.m. launch of the night's program and dinner that has historically been the primary fundraiser for local Democrats.

Upcoming Events

Castro, who previously served in the Texas legislature, attended Stanford and earned his law degree from Harvard.

Tickets are $150 for general admission and $100 for young Democrats.

Past keynote speakers have included Gov. Jerry Brown, Barney Frank and John Kerry.
