Orange County Sheriff Melting 501 Firearms … for World's Largest Cufflinks?

The Orange County Sheriff's Department will have the makings of a great pair of cufflinks Wednesday morning, when 501 firearms will be melted down.

Actually, the 305 handguns and 196 long guns will be taken to a still steel mill that will melt them down for reinforcing bar, also known as rebar.

Most of the guns had been turned over to the sheriff's Property and Evidence Bureau for destruction, also some had been seized from the scenes of crimes and suicides or from people who were prohibited from owning them.

The sheriff's department is turning the gun show into a media event scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Brad Gates Building in Santa Ana.
