Newport Beach Police Kill Man They Say Lunged at Officers with Sharp Object in 7-Eleven

The Newport Beach Police Department announced this morning that a man was shot to death by at least one of its officers inside a 7-Eleven Thursday night.

Cops got a call about a disturbance in the convenience store in the 1400 block of Superior Avenue, according to a statement from Jennifer Manzella, the department spokeswoman.

She indicates a man with a “sharp metal instrument” in his hand lunged at an officer before the shooting around 8:15 p.m. Police also used unspecified “less-lethal force” on the unidentified man, who was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he later died of his injuries, said Manzella.

A 7-Eleven clerk received minor injuries in an altercation with the man, she added.

Her department and, because of the officer-involved shooting, the Orange County District Attorney's office are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Justin Morouse at 949.644.3762 or Sergeant Keith Krallman at 949.644.3764.
