Man Shot Dead Inside Santa Ana Granny Flat

UPDATE NO. 2, JUNE 28, 4:45 P.M.: Explaining that the teenager arrested in the fatal shooting of Jesus Leon is being charged as an adult, the Orange County District Attorney’s office identified the defendant as Angel Alexis Hernandez. The Santa Ana 17-year-old is charged with one felony count of murder with a sentencing enhancement allegation for the intentional discharge of a firearm that, with a conviction, could send him to state prison for 50 years to life. Senior Deputy District Attorney Keith Burke of the Homicide Unit will ask that bail be set at $1 million at arraignment scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday in Santa Ana. The OCDA alleges Hernandez shot 19-year-old Leon in the head. The suspect was popped at a relative’s home in Santa Ana, prosecutors add.

UPDATE NO. 1, JUNE 28, 4:35 P.M.: Santa Ana cops have identified the deceased as Jesus Leon, 19, of Santa Ana, and his alleged killer as a 17-year-old Santa Anan whose name is not being released due to his age. Police say Leon was shot in the upper body before being pronounced dead by Orange County Fire Authority medics at the scene. Leon’s family members provided information that led detectives to the juvenile suspect, who was arrested at a residence where a firearm was recovered, according to police. The teen “was subsequently booked at Orange County Juvenile Hall for murder,” police add. 

ORIGINAL POST, JUNE 28, 9:35 A.M.: A man was shot to death in a Santa Ana residence late Monday, and early today a suspect was taken into custody, according to police.

Officers, who were responding to an 11 p.m. report of pops or shots fired, found a dead man inside a granny flat behind the 1000 block of West 2nd Street, says the Santa Ana Police Department.

No information has been released on what led to a suspect being taken into custody around 5:30 a.m., although police say they strongly suspect the shooting was gang related.

Neither the suspect nor the victim has been identified.
