The family of a 14-year-old girl who suffers from alopecia and was bullied for five years at her school in England since losing all of her hair, eyebrows and eyelashes decided to bring her to Los Angeles to cheer her up, videotaping her along the way. That culminated in Big in LA, an empowering short film/music video that went viral in the U.K. and brings Joelle Amery back to Southern California for an appearance Saturday night at the Indie Fest USA International Film Festival in Garden Grove.

The teen in even bigger back home, where she's been featured in the national press and on national TV. Brits have been eating up her anti-bullying story, evidenced by the positive feedback left with this recent piece in the Daily Mail. Her story was also picked up by papers in Hong Kong, Vietnam, Brazil and even China.

There is no cure for the rare medical condition alopecia (universalis), and the bullying Amery endured made her a shy, timid girl. That is not the bubbly, life-loving young teen shown prancing around La-La Land in Big in LA.

The film first brought her to the La Femme Film Festival in downtown Los Angeles last Saturday. She will next be at the Big in LA screening at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Festival Amphitheater in Garden Grove's Village Green Park. It's part of Indie Fest USA's Short Block 12 that also includes Posey, which stars veteran actress Sally Kirkland (also scheduled to attend; visit indiefestusa.com for more details.)

The fest's film schedule for today through Sunday follows on the next page, followed on the page after that by the music schedule ...
