Jesse Taylor Shockey Gets 11 Years for Teen-on-Teen Fatal Stabbing in Park: Update
The fatal stabber of a 19-year-old man in a Huntington Beach park days before Christmas 2011 was sentenced last week to 11 years in prison.
Jesse Taylor Shockey of Garden Grove had been charged as an adult at age 16 with murder, but he was convicted of voluntary manslaughter on Sept. 16. Orange County Superior Court Judge James Rogan in Fullerton gave the now 18-year-old one less year than the maximum punishment.
A friend of Dylan James Austin had got confronted Shockey about graffiti vandalism at Lake View Park in Huntington Beach, where the encounter escalated into a physical fight. Two weeks later, on the night of Dec. 21, 2011, Austin and some friends confronted Shockey at the park again, but the fight that followed this time ended with Shockey plunging a butcher knife into Austin's chest.
City News Service, which covered the trial, reports Deputy District Attorney Steve McGreevy argued for second-degree murder or voluntary manslaughter, while Raul Ramirez of the Orange County Alternate Defender's Office sought an acquittal based on self defense.
