Gustavo's Latest KCRW “OC Line”: On Whether Loretta Sanchez Will Run for Senate!

Anyone who knows anything about Orange County politics–and even those people who don't–know that Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez has always had dreams of running for the Senate. What got in her way, of course, were the battle axes in the way–Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer.

But with Boxer announcing recently that she won't run for reelection, there's an opening for Sanchez–one that she stands no chance of going through, as I explained in my latest KCRW-FM 89.9 “Orange County Line” commentary.

One should never underestimate Loretta, of course, but the odds are significantly against her. For starters, she'd have to fight against former mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (who's also mulling a run) for Southern California donors. And while no one exactly like Tony Villar anymore, at least he has connections to the progressives and liberals needed to win California. And even if she gets past Villaraigosa, then Sanchez would have to face California Attorney General Kamala Harris, who's already declared her candidacy and already locking up endorsements across the country.

Loretta, infamously, is a conservative Democrat, which means she might as well be a Republican. Hey…maybe she should pull a Charlie Christ and run as an independent…HA! We personally want Loretta to continue being the Willie Brown of OC, antagonizing Republicans so much that they'll try something crazy–like term limits–to get her out of office, in the process destroying democracy in California forever.

As usual, you can listen to it here. Enjoy!
