ORIGINAL POST, OCT. 28, 9:45 A.M.: A 20-year-old man allegedly called Anaheim Police Sunday evening to say he stabbed his mother.
Cops arrived at an apartment in the 1600 block of South Ninth Street after the 7 p.m. call to find a woman who had been stabbed multiple times, according to Anaheim Police Sgt. Bob Dunn. She was pronounced dead at UCI Medical Center in Orange at 7:30 p.m., Dunn added.
A male was taken into custody without incident, Dunn told City News Service, adding the investigation is ongoing.
The 20-year-old had been released from a mental hospital a month ago, another Anaheim Police spokesman, Lt. Tim Schmidt, told KTLA/Channel 5.
"We have been to this location before," Schmidt reportedly said. "... We've had several contacts over the year with him. We know he has been under the care of a doctor. That's part of our investigation-to determine if he'd been taking his medication, or the severity of his mental illness."
The arrested man's younger brothers and sisters, who also live in the apartment, were not home at the time of the attack.
UPDATE NO. 1, OCT. 28, 3:57 P.M.: Anaheim police have identified Gabriel Ramirez, 21, as the man alleged to have fatally stabbed his 42-year-old mother, Margarita Esquivias.
Ramirez, who'd recently been released from protective custody due to mental issues, is now jailed in lieu of $1 million bail, police added.
UPDATE NO. 2, OCT. 29, 10:07 A.M.: Gabriel Ramirez is scheduled to be arraigned today on one felony count of murder with a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a deadly weapon, according to the Orange County District Attorney's office.
The Anaheim 21-year-old, who is currently being held on $1 million bail, faces a maximum sentence of 26 years to life in state prison if convicted, the DA adds.
He is accused of repeatedly stabbing and murdering his 42-year-old mother Margarita Esquivias in a bedroom in her Anaheim home, and then calling 9-1-1 to report the slaying.
