CHP Officer Shoots and Kills Man on 5 Freeway After Victim Got Struck By Car

If you were on the 5 Freeway yesterday evening and experienced a massive traffic jam, know it happened because an officer with the California Highway Patrol shot a man to death after he got hit by a car.

Officials are still investigating the scene around the 5/133 interchange, so all we know is what they've told the press: that they responded to calls yesterday evening of a man in his 30s running across the northbound lanes of the 5, that he got hit by a car while crossing the southbound lanes but still kept going, and that a CHP officer shot him shortly after arriving on the scene. CHP Officer Paul Fox told the Orange County Register that a CHP officer was put on administrative leave following the shooting, per policy regarding such incidents. 

Law enforcement has yet to identify the victim, but the family of Mauricio Barron, Jr. is saying he was the victim. Furthermore, they are alleging that they only found out about Mauricio's death after hearing about it on social media and the news, and that investigators with the Orange County District Attorney's office and CHP were not providing answers to them as of late last night.

In a tearful video recorded outside the hospital where Mauricio was taken, his mother made a tearful plea for answers. She also said that the family had informed law enforcement officials before the shooting that Mauricio was "unstable":
