"Misleading statements" about a fatal shooting blamed on his son are the basis for the charge of being an accessory to involuntary manslaughter after the fact that Alexander Christopher Granados pleaded not guilty to Wednesday, prosecutors said this afternoon.
The revelation is in an Orange County District Attorney's arraignment statement that reports Matthew Jacob Granados faces one felony count of involuntary manslaughter by a lawful act in an unlawful manner, with a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a firearm.
The 21-year-old Santa Ana resident, who is being held on $75,000 bail heading into a continued arraignment hearing set for Sept. 30, could get 14 years in state prison if he is convicted, the OCDA says.
"The defendant is accused of handling a firearm in a careless manner, which resulted in a single shot firing into [16-year-old Alex] Ramirez's torso," reads the statement.
Matthew Granados' 41-year-old father could get three years in county jail if he is found guilty. Currently held on $25,000 bail, Alexander Granados has a pre-trial hearing scheduled Sept. 15.
"A person on the property called 911 and Matthew Granados is accused of fleeing the scene prior to the arrival of first responders," prosectors allege. "Alexander Granados is accused of making misleading statements about the shooting to Santa Ana Police Department officers in order to aid Matthew Granados in avoiding arrest."
The investigation is ongoing, the OCDA notes.
