A San Clemente man is being held for a rape in Oakland.

No, not the Oakland of A's, Raiders, Oak Town, Jerry Brown and Epic Beard Man fame, but the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania.

Akaninyene Efiong Akan, a 29-year-old Nigerian, is
charged with
rape, burglary, assault and other crimes tied to the Sept. 12 rape of a
20-year-old woman by an intruder who crept into her Parkview Avenue

Akan was arrested Dec. 9 in Costa Mesa by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and held in Orange County Jail before his extradition to Pennsylvania.

After entering the victim's second-floor unit, the rapist grabbed the woman by the throat and told her he had killed his ex-girlfriend and mother, that he had a knife and acid and to tell her roommate everything was okay if asked. He said he'd kill the woman, her roommate and her family if she told the cops what happened.

Five days later, Pittsburgh police questioned Akan after he entered an apartment building on Semple Street and exited after five minutes. While speaking with officers, Akan asked for a cigarette, which police retrieved after he smoked and tossed it.

Police claim DNA from the cigarette matches evidence collected at the Parkview Avenue rape scene.

The investigation has now shifted to whether Akan can be linked to other sexual
assaults, including a South Side Oakland rape that occurred the same week.

Akan had apparently lived in the area before but moved to Orange County for work, according to police.
