The UC Irvine School of Law hosts experts on American Indians in Orange County today and a CNN senior analyst and New Yorker staff writer who will likely face a sell-out crowd on Friday. (And for those playing the home version, yes, I did check to make sure these events are open to the public ... this time.)
First up is the panel on "Chamyúuy~wóoyilash: Where We Bow Our Heads Out of Respect--Cultivating Consciousness in Acjachemen Homelands." (The Acjachemen were the indigenous people of the land that became Orange County. They were renamed Juaneños by Spanish missionaries after Mission San Juan Capistrano.)
Co-sponsors UCI School of Law; the Center for Land, Environment, and Natural Resources; UCI Sustainability Initiative; Sacred Places Institute for Indigenous Peoples; ADVANCE Program for Equity & Diversity; and the American Indian Resource Program describe the panel:
A panel of Native community leaders and academics will discuss the history of the lands now known as Irvine, as well as the relationships between the place, the university and the Indigenous communities in whose territory the campus is located. Topics for discussion include the history of development's impact upon Native Nations in Orange County, the legal issues raised by development, and Native cultural perspectives on good planning and development.
UC Irvine Law Assistant Professor Seth Davis moderates the panel that includes: Angela Mooney D'Arcy, executive director, Sacred Places Institute for Indigenous Peoples and member of Juaneño Band of Mission Indians, Acjachemen Nation; Charles Sepulveda, Ph.D. candidate at UC Riverside and member of Acjachemen Nation; and Joyce Stanfield Perry, Cultural Resource director, Juaneño Band of Mission Indians, Acjachemen Nation.

CNN's Jeffrey Toobin, one of the most recognized and admired legal journalists in the country, delivers this year's Mark P. Robinson Jr. Lecture at UC Irvine School of Law, which expects a sold-out crowd from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday in the Paul Merage School of Business Auditorium.
Toobin, the author of several best-sellers including The Oath: The Obama White House and the Supreme Court (Doubleday, 2012), speaks on "The Supreme Court in the Age of Obama."
The former Harvard Law Review editor and assistant U.S. attorney in Brooklyn is delivering the annual lecture that is made possible by an anonymous donor in honor of Mark P. Robinson Jr., senior partner at Robinson Calcagnie Robinson Shapiro Davis, Inc. and a generous UCI Law donor.
