These days it feels like we need avant garde goddess Ann Magnuson more than ever. In an age where we're constantly bombarded with mindless entertainment, this legendary writer/singer/performance artist reminds us that the most transcendent form of escape happens when we finally close our eyes and turn on our brains. That's the thought process behind Dream Girl, her first album in over a decade.

The immersive, audio experience is a wild, surrealist escape that crawls between your ears and fires up your mind's inner movie projector for a hour. The rest is really up to you.

"This record is more an audio experience and people are meant to create their own videos," she told Paper Magazine earlier this year. "A theater of the mind."

This weekend, that theater of the mind will take place at a theater in reality when Magnuson brings Dream Girl to a live audience at the Steve Allen Theater on Saturday, Nov. 19.

Upcoming Events

The show features all the songs from the new album plus some special surprises. The presentation will be like a surreal radio play, full of whimsical song and dreamscape spoken word. The 11 tracks will be brought to life by Magnuson and her band including Joe Berardi on percussion, drums, vibes, The Millionaire (cool name!) on guitar and Marc Doten on bass.

Kate Pierson of the B-52s makes a vocal appearance on “Cat in the Sun”—so we there's a good chance she'll be on stage as well, though we don't ever claim to know what twists and turns Magnuson's live show will take. All we know is that we're ready to be entertained.

Ann Magnuson performs at the Steve Allen Theater tomorrow, Nov. 19. 8 p.m. $20. For tickets and show info, click here.
