Parker Macy Soon to Open New Record Store at the Lab

Parker Macy is all over the place in the best possible way. When he's not shredding in Pistolero, he's a solo artist who plays the blues. And as if that weren't enough, he's opening a vinyl record store at the Lab on March 1.

Called Creme Tangerine (it's a Beatles reference), the shop will specialize in classic rock with a focus on jazz and blues and will be a sanctuary where shoppers can kick back, listen to records or spend hours digging through bins.

OC Weekly (Ryan Ritchie): You play the blues and metal, but your dad is a preacher. What?
Parker Macy: It's a sensitive topic at the dinner table. That's why I have a different dinner table.

Tell me about opening a store.
I'm the owner, and a lot of this stuff is from my personal collection that I've been collecting since I was 4 years old. I've got thousands of records, and I collect weird stuff, so some of it will be rare Beatles pressings and some of it will be instructional golf LPs. We're also selling vintage record players.

So instead of having a garage sale, you're opening a store?

This has all been planned as opening a store. I'm a music junkie hoarder, but I'm also a music junkie hoarder with a purpose. It's been an idea for maybe 10 years, ever since I started taking collecting seriously, when I started going into stores and becoming involved in the underground-cult-ish behavior of record diggers. Of course, I wanted to be a musician, but I also wanted to be involved in record digging for the rest of my life, and I guess this is the next step.

What advice do you have for the diggers coming into your store?
The store will be special because the Lab is building a hang-out area with couches. It's really more of a “make yourself at home; tell us what you want to listen to” vibe. I'm not going to give anyone advice on what they should listen to. Whatever brings customers joy, we're going to hopefully have it and put it on for you. I can't tell you what to listen to, but I can tell you what we have in stock. Of course, if you want to get into some collectors stuff like labels and serial codes, then we can give you all that information, too.

How do you expect a jazz and blues vinyl store will do at the Lab?
I don't know. I've never owned a record store before. I've never owned a record store at the Lab before, either. I think it will do well, and we're going to do our best to carry new vinyl as soon as possible so we can meet the demand of all the indie bands. I think we're going to be more in tune with carrying music from the golden age of music.

Are you throwing an opening party to celebrate?

There is definitely going to be an event.
