John Popper's Advice For Creatives

Blues Traveler's frontman John Popper is back on his feet again. Wednesday marked the band's first show after Popper's emergency surgery to repair three collapsed vertebrae in his spine and neck earlier this month, which caused the band to cancel and delay several tour dates.

“If treated quickly, they will ultimately have me up and running in two weeks,” Popper told fans on August 5. “If neglected as it has been, it would be far worse to the point of paralysis so need to take care of this now.”

Popper explained his spinal problem had been “building for years” and could have resulted in “total and permanent paralysis.” We are happy Popper's surgery went well and wish him a safe recovery!

Here are some interesting factoids we learned about Popper from his interview with New York Post

-The “Traveler” in Blues Traveler was taken from a line in Ghostbusters: “The Traveler has come!”
-Popper sent Trey Anastasio of Phish a semi-trailer filled with diapers as a baby shower present.
-Popper's high-school band teacher was Anthony Biancosino, the inspiration for J.K. Simmons’ Oscar-winning character in “Whiplash.”
-Popper almost had a threesome with porn star Ron Jeremy, but was “traumatized” by Jeremy's, uh, gift.

You can read more crazy accounts of Popper's life in his memoir, Suck and Blow: And Other Stories I'm Not Supposed to Tell. Blues Traveler will be performing at the Kaaboo Festival in Del Mar on September 18, 2016.
