The Alley Restaurant
4501 W. Coast Hwy.
Newport Beach, CA 92660
949-646-9126
http://www.thealleynewportbeach.com It's an Irish-looking joint, yeah, but it's more St. Patrick the saint than St. Patrick the sloshed. Stained glass ceiling panels, nautical antiques, a pretty damn good dinner menu: The Alley's a surprisingly laid-back and classy gateway to the Newport peninsula's world of corn dogs and Coronas. The drink specials, though, trend weirdly froofy. They've got a Bazooka Joe on the menu -- yes, it tastes like bubblegum -- but the barkeep might serve you a slight smirk alongside it. No real ridicule, though. The Alley's too pleasant for that.

Avalon Bar
820 W. 19th St.
Costa Mesa, CA 92627
949-515-4650
http://www.myspace.com/theavalonbar A dive bar in all respects, Avalon Bar manages to fit a little classiness into its hole-in-the-wall proportions. Those of you familiar with this local dive already know at least two major details: 1. Contrary to what the kitschy, light bulb-lined arrow pointing down at the bar's entrance may lead you to believe, this is place is no disco. 2. This establishment doesn't serve hard liquor, so you can leave any hope of a vodka and Red Bull at the door. That said, the less than dim lighting, hanging lanterns, and beautifully back-lit bar make this place awesome for intimate meetings and the occasional live show.

Belmont Station
5300 E. 2nd St., Long Beach
Long Beach, CA 90803
562-433-3907
http://www.myspace.com/belmontstationlbc Nestled amongst schmancy high-end boutiques and gourmet restaurants sits this wholly unpretentious watering hole. Equal parts classy and divey, the exterior of Belmont Station looks great, with its large, picturesque windows and neat iron gate corralling the smoking section. Inside, though? Just your typical drinking establishment. A long, narrow bar greets thirsty patrons at the door. The other end of the room houses a small dance floor that exhibits live bands and DJs from time to time. Beware the Kamikaze shots, they'll knock you on your ass.

Blackie's By the Sea
2118 W. Oceanfront
Newport Beach, CA 92663
949-675-1074
http://www.blackiesbythesea.com The decorator for this peninsula dive was clearly laid off no later than 1991, but that's okay: When you've got sand outside, cheap beer at the bar and 50-cent pool tables in the back, stuffed hammerheads and moldy photos of patrons past become charming. Blackie's exudes a do-not-enter vibe -- maybe it's the "Sorry We're Open" sign in the window -- but that's a ruse. After competing with the overdressed crowd spilling out of the trendier places a few yards away, this place feels like a grody slice of home.

Chain Reaction
1652 W. Lincoln Ave.
Anaheim, CA 92801
714-635-6067
http://www.allages.com/ Remember when you were 17 and all you wanted to do was to be able to see your favorite band that never played any all-ages venue? EVER? Well the Chain Reaction solves all that. This is like the introductory venue for every band that passes through Orange County--everyone's played the Chain at some point in their careers. It's a small, slightly dingy venue located in a strange Anaheim shopping center surrounded by car dealerships. The floors are sticky, the stage is small, and dusty T-shirts of bands that have played the venue grace the walls. But whoever said rock and roll was clean? It's a no-fuss venue. Covers are cheap, bands frequent. Everyone wins.

The Continental Room
115 W. Santa Fe Ave.
Fullerton, CA 92832
714-273-0077
http://www.myspace.com/thecontinentalroom Tucked away on a tiny side street in downtown Fullerton, the Continental Room doesn't look like much from the outside, but don't let that fool you. The interior is reminiscent of a lush, red-lit, turn of the century boudoir. The Continental Room opened in 1925 which makes this charming watering hole the oldest in the city. Bands and DJs play regularly on the small circular stage in the corner of the club. It's too bad this is one those places that requires a steep drink minimum just to sit at one of the red vinyl boothsis this Fullerton or Hollywood?

The Crosby
400 N. Broadway
Santa Ana, CA 92701
714-543-3543
http://www.thisisthecrosby.com After a long battle with the city of Santa Ana to finally get the Crosby up and running, former Weekly cover boys finally managed to sort through all that red tape and got this gem to shine right in the middle of Santa Ana's Artist Village. Serving a vegan-friendly menu well into the wee hours, the Crosby attends to nightlife-lovers with a myriad of drinks and talented DJs filling the void. The coolest detail: during the daytime, beats sometimes blast through a multitude of ghetto blasters lining the walls.

The Derby Deli & Dueling Piano Bar
27741 Crown Valley Pkwy.
Mission Viejo, CA 92691-6532
949-582-5397
http://www.derbymv.com/ Go on a night with drink specials, and this joint -- which you'd think would serve as a haven for moms killing time while their kids are at the video game shack next door -- transforms into a pretty fun nightclub. "Dueling pianos" is cooler than it sounds: Outfitted with a drummer, endless song catalog and some booze, the two piano players act and sound like a rock band. Tuesdays get packed, but if you can't get in, there are always those shoot-'em-ups nearby...

Kelly's
5716 E. Second St., Long Beach
Long Beach, CA 90803
(562)433-4983
Referred to by locals as The Backwards K, Kellys has the charm of a rustic, dimly lit hunting lodge. The clientele might lean just a little towards the senior side (other locals call it Gods Waiting Room), but if you want one of the best dirty martinis in town, Kellys is the place. Its also a great stop if you happen to be drinking your way down 2nd street.

Kitsch Bar
891 Baker St., Ste. A10
Costa Mesa, CA 92626
714-546-8580
http://www.kitschbar.com/ Nestled away in a Costa Mesa strip mall, Kitsch Bar is so fucking posh that they only need a sign printed in what seems to be 14 pt font. But once you locate it the discrete front door (look left!), you'll discover a swank lounge with dramatic lighting, mod style seats, and cheeky decor featuring '70s Playboys or Bob's Big Boy dolls lining the walls. DJs spin nightly; everything from disco punk to downtempo and chill. The dress code is reasonable (no shorts or sandals), but you might want to scale it up to avoid the hipster hairy eyeball.

La Cave
1695 Irvine Ave.
Costa Mesa, CA 92627
949-646-7944
http://www.lacaverestaurant.com La Cave (pronounced CAHV) lives up to its name! After showing your ID to the doorman, you make your way down a basic set of stairs into a... cave. Complete with a bar and restaurant, La Cave is another favorite venue to play, abundant with locals. While the food is okay (hope you like steak!), it's really the down-to-earth vibe and overall lack of snootiness that attracts most to this bar, restaurant and venue. Hipsters rub elbows next to seniors, but most of the elderly diners are gone by the time the loud rock music starts. The stage is a humble one, but believe us when we say it gets totally packed when bands like the Barstow Boyz belt out their awesomely bad '70s and '80s covers of monster hits.
