Subtle Nudges

Rothick Art Haus, the latest gallery/institution/anti-art school to pop up and inspire madness in all its crazy forms, celebrates its opening with “Subtle Nudges,” a collection of paintings by East Palo Alto artist Joshua Lawyer—and this Sunday is your last chance to catch the exhibit. Taking inspiration from his Tongan background and a heavy dose of visual incentive from his brother, a graffiti artist (a respected art form in its own right), Lawyer depicts female subjects who recall the days of acorn-breasted Venus von Willendorf—and when images of female beauty and fertility would be assets like large, distorted, swelled hips. Combine that primal aesthetic with candy colors and plenty of pop culture, and you’ve got all the makings of a great art movement.

Saturdays, Sundays, noon. Starts: Jan. 9. Continues through Jan. 31, 2010
