Of all the artifacts our ancestors have left behind, it’s the clothing that best shows what kind of lifestyle they led and what influenced them as a person. In the same way that the Enlightenment’s popularity influenced Europeans to no longer dress in the extravagant wigged and tufted manner of Louis XIV, American grunge music’s presence on the airwaves replaced the crimped hair, shoulder pads and pearls of the Madonna era—fashion is constantly changing. Perhaps no one can describe the cultural transformations that defined the fashion of American generations better than Bowers Museum docent Suzanne Snyder. Snyder will present a beautiful selection of outfits, costumes and suits ranging from 1900 to the 1960s—such as flapper dresses, poodle skirts, Jackie O. pillbox hats and everything in between.
