Geographer

San Francisco’s Geographer are a heart-on-the-sleeve indie trio that builds their songs mostly around sorrowful cello and waves of New Order-style synth—in fact, they covered New Order on their first B-side, telegraphing the way to the melancholy pop sound they’d soon develop on their own. 2010 EP Animal Shapes was pixilated to the limit with pulsing synthesizer hooks, but newest album Myth adds in more guitar than ever. It’s (something of) a different sound but the sentiment still feels the same. The Arcade Fire owns the word “anthemic” and New Order’s got a great claim to “glacial,” but exploring somewhere in between are Geographer, who are working hard to find some unexplored territory of their own.
