August Wilson left a legacy that few playwrights can even pretend to hold a candle to. Over the course of his career, Wilson created a series of ten plays, each set in a different decade of the 20th century and each depicting the hardships and triumphs of African Americans. This massive feat earned the writer two Pulitzer Prizes for Drama. One of those award-wining plays, and the sixth in his series, takes a turn at the South Coast Repertory this month. Set in the 1950s, Fences centers around the life of Troy Maxson, a former baseball player for the Negro League, now a garbage man dealing with middle age and fading dreams. Played by film and stage veteran Charlie Robinson, Maxson’s tragic-hero character emits a complexity that could only be conceived by one of the greatest playwrights of the past century.
